Code of Practice Compliance
As a trusted professional Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), I, Alec Hatwood, am committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct, professionalism, and business ethics in line with the DVSA and the National Associations Strategic Partnership (NASP).

This industry code of practice has been agreed between NASP and DVSA, providing a framework within which all instructors should operate. As an ADI, I confirm my compliance with this code.
The NASP member groups are:
- Approved Driving Instructors National Joint Council (ADI NJC)
- Driving Instructors Association (DIA)
- The Motor Schools Association of Great Britain (MSA GB)
By adhering to the code, I am entitled to:
- Display my ADI registration to show compliance.
- Use the “ADI Code of Practice – I’ve Signed Up” logo on my website and literature.
1. Personal Conduct
I will:
- Always behave in a professional manner in line with the National Standard for Driver and Rider Training.
- Comply with all legislative requirements, including safeguarding, equality, and data protection laws.
- Demonstrate a high standard of driving and instructional ability, prioritising road safety and respect for all road users.
- Use mobile devices only when safely parked and in compliance with the law.
- Avoid inappropriate language, physical contact, or inappropriate discussions unrelated to driver training, except where safeguarding concerns arise.
- Treat all clients with respect, ensuring their training is effective, safe, and aligned with the National Standard for Driving Cars and Light Vans (Category B).
- Use social media responsibly, protecting client confidentiality, and refraining from defamatory or inappropriate content.
- Not publish or circulate driving test footage without prior permission from both DVSA and the client.
2. Business Dealings
I will:
- Safeguard and account for all monies paid in advance, and provide details on request.
- Make clients aware of this code and my terms of business, including:
- My legal identity, contact details, and school information.
- Lesson prices, duration, and conditions for use of my vehicle on test.
- Cancellation and refund policies.
- Complaints procedure.
- Verify clients’ entitlement to drive and eyesight requirements.
- Keep accurate records of progress and provide advice on when to apply for driving tests, considering DVSA rules and waiting times.
- Ensure my vehicle is fully roadworthy, compliant with motoring law, correctly equipped, and test-ready.
- Accompany clients on their test and attend the debrief when requested.
3. Advertising
I will ensure that:
- All advertising is clear, fair, and not misleading.
- Any claims, including pass rates, are accurate, verifiable, and comply with the CAP Advertising Codes.
4. Conciliation
I will:
- Handle complaints promptly and fairly in line with my complaint’s procedure.
- If a client cannot resolve an issue directly with me, they may seek further guidance:
- Business-related concerns: Citizens Advice.
- Professional conduct concerns: Contact the ADI Registrar.
